Who we are

Friends, commonly known as Quakers, or the Religious Society of Friends in Truth, consist of a spiritually diverse group of people across the world. When reading about Friends, you will find the the term Friends & Quakers interchanged frequently.

What do Friends at Centre Meeting Believe

What holds us together at Centre Meeting is not so much commonly held theological beliefs but rather a commitment to the historic Quaker practices of silent, expectant worship and seeking the sense of the meeting when conducting business. Centre Friends Meeting is an unprogrammed meeting, in that we do not have a pastor or other person “leading” meeting for worship. Instead, we sit silently in expectant waiting, and share verbal testimony when moved to do so.

Centre Meeting is also home to a number of frequent Attenders who are equally part of the core community, and have found a Home at Centre just as Members of the Religious Society of Friends in Truth. Attenders participate in the same manner as Members & are engaged in all aspects of the Centre Community. Frequent Attenders hold a wide variety of spiritual beliefs, while also respecting and finding value in the Quaker Worship & Decision Making Practices.

In addition, we seek to exemplify in our corporate and individual lives through six historic Quaker Testimonies, often referred to as SPICES. These testimonies are moral values Quaker espouse to live by in their daily interactions.

SPICES:

  1. Simplicity - We make room in our lives for what is really important.
  2. Peace - We seek non-violent solutions to problems.
  3. Integrity - We live a life congruent with our values.
  4. Community - We love and care for each other.
  5. Equality - We treat everyone equally.
  6. Stewardship - We care for the earth and the property bequeathed to us by our Quaker forebears.
